Caribbean Church Update: Moral Crossroads

Vol. 1 | Issue 9 A weekly roundup of significant happenings, moves, and missions across the Caribbean’s Christian and ecumenical landscape.

Headline: Archbishop Philip Wright Advocates for Reparative Justice in London

The Most Rev. Philip Wright, Archbishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI), made a major impact on the global stage this week at the "Breaking the Chains of Injustice" consultation in London. Archbishop Wright strongly backed the Church of England’s Project Spire—a £100 million initiative aimed at redressing the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.

Archbishop Wright stated that the Anglican Church is at a "significant moral crossroads," arguing that the centuries of harm caused by enslavement demand "deliberate and intentional redress." He highlighted that this is not merely about money, but about funding schools and hospitals to help Caribbean people step out of the legacy of a "horrendous period of history."

Ecumenical & Denominational Moves

Cuba: Bishops Request Delay for Vatican Visit

In a move reflecting the gravity of the national crisis, the Catholic Bishops of Cuba have asked Pope Leo XIV to postpone their scheduled ad limina visit to Rome. The visit was originally set to begin on February 16, but the bishops cited the "worsening socio-economic situation" and "instability" in Cuba as reasons to remain with their congregations.

WCC: "You Are Not Alone" Prayer for the Caribbean

The World Council of Churches (WCC) hosted an ecumenical prayer for the Caribbean region on February 16 in Geneva. WCC General Secretary Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay met with ambassadors from the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, and Jamaica, assuring them that the global church stands with the region in the face of climate catastrophe, disaster, and displacement.
