Caribbean Church Update: Pilgrimage and Pastoral Care
Vol. 1 | Issue 16
A weekly roundup of significant happenings, moves, and missions across the Caribbean’s Christian and ecumenical landscape.
Headline: Caribbean Bishops to Meet Pope Leo XIV in Historic Vatican Pilgrimage
In a significant move to strengthen ties between the Caribbean and the Holy See, the bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference (AEC) have finalized plans for their Ad Limina Apostolorum visit to Rome, scheduled for April 27 to May 3, 2026.
This "pastoral pilgrimage," which takes place roughly every five years, will see the region's Catholic leadership presenting quinquennial reports to Pope Leo XIV. These reports provide a comprehensive look at the spiritual and social realities of the Antilles, specifically highlighting the church's response to migration, climate change, and economic hardship. The bishops have also scheduled a spiritual pilgrimage to Assisi to mark the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ death.
Ecumenical & Denominational Moves
Tributes for Bishop Burchell McPherson
The Catholic and ecumenical communities in Jamaica are in mourning following the passing of The Most Rev. Burchell McPherson, Bishop Emeritus of Montego Bay. Tributes have poured in from across the region, praising his "paternal care" and his long-standing commitment to the poor in Western Jamaica. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kingston.
Regional Mission & Church Growth
Youth Ministry: "Beyond the Alleluias"
Following the Easter celebrations, The Rt. Rev. Leon Golding, Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has challenged parishes to ensure their ministry to youth doesn't end with the liturgical season. In a post-Easter mandate, he called for "comprehensive catechesis" and mental health support, urging churches to address the "now what?" of the resurrection by engaging young people in social transformation.
Guyanese Lay Leader Elevated to Regional Post
In a boost for Caribbean lay leadership, a Guyanese representative has been appointed as a Vice President of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA). This role is expected to increase the Caribbean's voice in discussions regarding environmental stewardship and the protection of indigenous communities within the wider Amazonian territory.
