Caribbean Church Update: Holy Week Hope and Solidarity

Vol. 1 | Issue 14

A weekly roundup of significant happenings, moves, and missions across the Caribbean’s Christian and ecumenical landscape.

Headline: Global Ecumenical Leaders Conclude Solidarity Mission to Cuba

In a powerful display of regional and global support, a high-level international ecumenical delegation concluded a four-day solidarity visit to Cuba on March 31. Led by Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), the group also included leadership from the Anglican Communion, the World Methodist Council, and the World Communion of Reformed Churches.

The delegation spent Holy Week witnessing the "prophetic witness" of Cuban churches amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis fueled by economic sanctions and fuel shortages. In a press conference in Havana, Bishop Anthony Poggo (Anglican) highlighted the vibrant religious freedom he observed, noting that members preached and shared in Palm Sunday services without restriction. The mission’s goal was to bring the "Cuban reality" back to international organizations to advocate for the lifting of the embargo.

Ecumenical & Denominational Moves

Christians Mark Holy Week with Processions Across the Region

From the streets of Port of Spain to the parishes of Jamaica, Holy Week 2026 has been marked by a return to massive public displays of faith. In Guatemala and parts of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, Palm Sunday commemorations saw children dressed as angels leading processions, while Good Friday services today (April 3) are drawing thousands for the traditional "Seven Last Words."

Leadership Consecration: "Preparing for the New Season"

On April 2, Rev. Alecia Jones was consecrated during a spring leadership gathering. The message, titled "Preparing for the New Season" (Isaiah 43:19), resonated with many regional leaders who are navigating the transition from Lenten introspection to Easter mission expansion. This move highlights a continued trend of elevating female voices within the Caribbean’s Pentecostal and Independent fellowships.

Regional Mission & Church Growth

Ecumenical Advocacy Days 2026 Announced

While regional missions are peaking, Caribbean ecumenical bodies are also gearing up for Ecumenical Advocacy Days (April 20–22). Under the theme "Protecting People, Peace, and Planet," delegates from across the islands will join a diverse Christian coalition to advocate for "Anti-Militarism" and climate justice—topics that have become central to Caribbean church-state dialogues this year.

U.S. Virgin Islands: Carnival and Church Intersection

In St. Thomas, the St. Thomas Carnival (April 26 – May 2) is seeing increased involvement from local church groups. Many congregations are hosting "Pre-Carnival" prayer breakfasts and youth-focused fests, attempting to provide a Christian presence within the cultural celebrations and advocating for "clean" festivities.

Quick Hits & Significant Dates

  • Good Friday (April 3): All major islands are observing a public holiday today, with ecumenical services focused on the passion of Christ and regional reconciliation.
